Big Moon Rising

I'm pleased as punch with myself today!

While driving my bike yesterday evening, i was passing through the lonely stretch on the way home that has no buildings around, and has greenery on both sides of the road.

It was an empty road, and it must have been around 545~6pm... so the brightness of the afternoon-sun was still around, but without any of the harshness.

When i looked to my side i saw a fantastically large moon! Awesome moment then. A full moon too, and really bright, considering the time - I was immediately reminded of the 'Bruce Almighty'-scene where Jim Carrey uses his divine powers to "pull in" the moon, to set the mood for a romantic evening.

Anyway, i drove on past and didn't think to check out the moon again in the night.

Skip to today and i read this headline from a NASA site:
"Biggest Full Moon of the Year: Take 2"

There's a picture in the article that's very similar to the what i saw yesterday, to give you a better idea. Apparently, the moon was at it's Perigee yesterday.

I feel like patting myself on the head for being so "aware of my surroundings", and get lucky enough to notice a rare, beautiful moonrise. (I don't do that so often, so it's nice!)  I guess, a Zen-moment...on a well maintained motorbike. (LOLz!)

Hebegeebees!

3 recent news-reports have given me the hebegeebees! I don't know why, but they came along the news in a particularly evil chronology. Each event was bad enough in itself - but the sequence in which they got reported somehow, unfortunately, registered to my mind (damn it) and now it's stuck there - giving me hell.

Article One - Turns out, don't ask how, that i'm connected to this Indian-guy by just 2 degrees of separation! (Whats that?)
Article Two - Damn, it happened to a Dentist!!! By a Dentist!!! and with a Bard Parker blade! Thats sharrrrp!

Then came along article 3, which reinforced everything wrong with the first two articles!

Article Three - Indian! and Ouch!

(Not to mention the fact that for the past 2 days, my part of town has seen one act of burglary+arson, one act of suicide, and one act of murder...it seems like everytime i open the paper my eyes automatically get drawn to "Hennur"/"Kammanahalli" and there's something horrible about the article.)

BTW, here's a Bard Parker blade for you - enjoy!... if you're a guy - shudder now!

Tiger Tiger Burning Bright....

I just saw the most AMAZING YouTube clip.... which i have linked to below.
Definitely on of the best clips i have ever seen online!!!

It shows an actual attack by a tigress....on a mahout, sitting atop an elephant.

The incident happened in Kaziranga National Park, Assam.

A large adult tigress, suspected to be the mother of the two cubs rescued from a village adjoining Kaziranga, severely mauled the mahout of an Assam Forest Department elephant...named Joymala.

The 25-year-old mahout, who was badly lacerated, lost three fingers on his left hand. Doctors are worried about the onset of gangrene and may have to amputate his left palm.
"...As the elephant moved towards the tigress, it did a mock charge. The guard fired two blanks to discourage her and she ran away into the next field, where the paddy was thick and hid there..."
The team cautiously moved towards it and was within 20 feet where she was growling away. The forest-ranger could see her clearly and took a shot at it with the dart gun.
The dart missed her and this enraged her so much that she charged..... and took a “flying” leap on to the elephant’s head.

Vivek Menon, executive director of the WTI (Wildlife Trust of India), who recently saw the footage, said,
"...I could never imagine that a tiger could so effortlessly leap from the ground on to an adult elephant’s head, which is at least 12 feet above the ground...
...The footage showed that the mahout saw the tigress leaping and threw the metal ankush at it to defend himself. The tigress saw the ankush coming, dodged it in mid-leap and took a swipe at Pegu without actually landing on the elephant, which had stepped back..."

What now happened was even more amazing!!!

As the tigress landed on the ground Joymala (the working elephant) quickly pinned the tigress down with her left fore foot and tried to control it with its trunk. The tigress struggled under this weight for at least half a minute roaring, as other people in the vicinity shouted and fired shots in the air.
"If it had not been for Joymala, both Bodo and the guard would have been badly injured...or dead"
The tigress finally struggled loose and ran away. Meanwhile, Joymala, which was trying to aggressively chase the tigress, was calmed by the veterinarian.

P.S: The article brings to mind the English poet Blake's famous lines...
"Tiger, Tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?"

Imogen Heap

Test for Genius:

Have you heard of this artist?
...Speaking for myself, she's bloody brilliant!
Imogen Heap
(Album: Speak for Yourself )

I was lucky to get an mp3 CD....but its a bit difficult to lay hands on a RAR file for Imogen (i've tried), so you could try downing some individual songs off some off the usual sites... My picks: Headlock, Angry Angel, Speeding Cars, Hide and Seek.

PS: If you'll trust my taste in music....also try "Natalie Merchant" (Album: Tigerlily)

Collective Chaos - the muted adventure.

Ok, I finally have finished my exams. My last exam was yesterday. Since our class takes the exams as 2 batches on 2 consecutive days, there isn’t really any point celebrating on the 1st day since half the class still hasn’t finished.

So, for want of something to do in the evening, I decided to go checkout Collective Chaos. Now CC, is part-forum for budding young filmmakers, part-film-society which arranges weekly screenings of alternative cinema. How I know this? Because its on the website… beyond that, I know nothing. I first learnt about it on the college bulletin-board, and was told it was a nice place to go if one liked art-movies etc…and that further details could be obtained ‘at-venue’.

Also, CC is on Millers Road…really quite close to home. And the weekly screening is on a Friday, a day I usually find myself quite bored in the evenings anyway. I’ve been putting off a check-out-visit for a long time now, and I decided it would be a nice tension-release after the exam.

So yesterday I went to CC. I walked into the Cinematheque…it’s on the 5th floor. I’m 10mins late and so I’m not surprised to see a lone guard sitting near the door, and no one else around. I confirm I’m at the right place and walk on in.

The show must’ve started and that’s why there’s no one around, I figure. So I walk past the heavy sound proof doors and enter a smaller-than-expected auditorium. The lights are off and there’s a overhead projector on, playing a foreign-language movie with English sub-titles.

So, I take a seat. There are people all around me engrossed in the movie, but the glow off the screen isn’t enough to make out any details. I’m trying to make out the company I’m in….young/old? College/working? Serious/informal? I can’t make out anything, so I stop staring out of the corner of my eyes and pay attention to the screen.

The movie is called “Blackboards”, and is about a teacher who carries his blackboard with him everywhere, high in the Afghan mountains, persuading the boys who run the illegal paths through the mountains to Iraq to smuggle contraband to let him teach them. They’re obviously disinterested.

It’s a bleak landscape, and plenty of gallows humor. Still no one watching laughs, mumbles or says anything. It’s really weird. No one talks. No cell phones going off. No one getting up in between. Nothing.

Then suddenly the movie is over. The kids get shot as they’re crawling amidst a large flock of wooly sheep past the border guard. Still nothing. No shocked gasps. No whispers to the neighbour. There’s a pause. Then people start getting up and leaving.

No one’s talking much. People move out in groups of 2’s and 3’s. Outside, the volume is not much higher than it was inside. People quietly read the circular about next weeks movie, and move off.

The whole experience was absolutely surreal…like one of those weird dreams when things only ‘happen’ and no one talks. Like an out-of-body experience. I walked away feeling a bit numbed by the whole thing.

It was such a weird experience that I’m going back next week.
